ABSTRACT
This study explored the experiences, challenges, and coping strategies of single parents in Barangay Sabang, Lipa City, Batangas. Using a qualitative phenomenological design, the research examined the lived realities of 23 single parents through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Findings revealed that single parents face multifaceted challenges, with financial strain emerging as the most prevalent due to low household income and limited employment opportunities. Time management difficulties were universally experienced, as respondents struggled to balance work, childcare, and personal responsibilities. Childcare concerns, such as inconsistent caregiving support, further intensified their daily demands, while some participants reported experiencing societal stigma and discrimination, which affected both their emotional well-being and their children’s social experiences. Despite these challenges, respondents demonstrated resilience through various coping strategies, including building support networks, creating structured routines, involving their children in household tasks, and practicing financial management techniques such as budgeting and prioritizing essential needs. The study also found that many single parents lacked access to government assistance, highlighting gaps in awareness and implementation of existing welfare programs. Overall, the results underscore the need for strengthened policy implementation, accessible social services, and community-based interventions that address the economic, emotional, and caregiving needs of single-parent households. The study recommends expanding financial support, improving childcare services, establishing local support groups, and enhancing awareness of the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act (RA 11861). Future research may examine the experiences of single fathers, guardians, or the long-term developmental outcomes of children raised in single-parent families.
