ABSTRACT

Childhood emotional neglect—where caregivers inadequately meet a child’s emotional needs—can lead to various problems in emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, coping strategies, and even influence sexual behaviors in adulthood. This study explores the consequences of unmet emotional needs in childhood and their connection to adult sexual behavior. Using a qualitative case study approach, seven participants were screened using the Emotional Neglect Scale, with in-depth interviews conducted with three who scored high. Results indicated that emotional neglect in childhood contributes to long-term emotional distress and social isolation due to the absence of parental support. Participants reported difficulty expressing emotions, seeking comfort, and forming healthy relationships. These emotional struggles extend into adulthood, often manifesting in sexual behavior through identity confusion, poor boundary-setting, and the pursuit of validation. Some individuals experience emotional conflict and cognitive dissonance due to these behaviors. However, resilience emerged as a protective factor, enabling personal growth and emotional recovery despite early neglect. Participants used different ways to cope, and those who had strong support systems were generally better at managing their emotions. The findings highlight the importance of providing focused programs that promote identity development, healthy coping skills, and mental health awareness to better support individuals who have experienced childhood emotional neglect.
