ABSTRACT
Among the major considerations of teachers in their management strategies are student characteristics. It is crucial to have a contextualized understanding of the current generation of learners in areas significant to classroom management. Hence, this study examined the characteristics of the new cohort of Filipino students, particularly their communication preferences, concerns, interests, triggers, and values. This study also scrutinized the significant events perceived to have a major influence in shaping their qualities. The case study provided an in-depth understanding of the case. Data from individual interviews were triangulated from six teachers and 10 male and female junior high school students in Bataan, Philippines. Findings show that TechGen students’ characteristics are both similar and different from those of the other cohorts, although the differences are usually emphasized. The majority of the characteristics that emerged were the result of age rather than cohort, making them more similar to other generations at the same life stage. However, cohort and period effects interacted with age effects in some aspects. These characteristics of the generation result from various shapers across their socio-political, technological, and cultural spheres. The findings of this study have an impact on pre-service and in-service teacher education curricula and training, as well as on the analysis of the unintended effects of educational policies and practices.
