ABSTRACT

The study “Exploring Suicidal Ideation among College Students: A Development Program on Mental Health Challenges” examines the underlying factors contributing to suicidal thoughts, behaviors, and coping mechanisms among college students. Using a qualitative research design and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study explores students’ lived experiences to understand how academic pressure, social expectations, and emotional distress influence suicidal ideation. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews using validated tools such as the Suicide Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R) and the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). Findings revealed two major themes: Cultivating Emotional Balance and Transforming Mental Health through Support and Action. These themes highlight the importance of emotional regulation, self-compassion, reflective decision-making, and access to support systems in preventing suicidal tendencies. Additionally, resilience, social connections, and proactive coping strategies were identified as protective factors. Based on these insights, the study proposes the “SELF: Suicidal Behavior Awareness, Exploration, Linking, and Future Planning” program, which focuses on awareness, early intervention, and empowerment through counseling and psychoeducation. The findings underscore the urgent need for universities to strengthen mental health services and foster supportive environments that promote life satisfaction, resilience, and hope among students.
